Menopause Kuel Thought Leader: Lorraine Miano
You’d have to be living in a cave or under a rock not to realize that Menopause has become one HOT TOPIC.
“brands are promoting products specifically for menopausal women”
After all, half the world’s population will experience menopause in one form or another if they live long enough, and with 6,000 women per day reaching menopause in the U.S., it’s no surprise that the “menopause economy” is set to reach $600 billion by 2025.
Celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts have stepped forward to encourage women to embrace this time of life. Healthcare providers are now realizing that they must become more educated in menopause so that they may guide and support women through this sometimes debilitating transition. More and more media outlets are putting forth articles and opinion pieces about “the change” and brands are promoting products specifically for menopausal women.
This is good news for women, as more light is being shed on this natural phase of a woman’s life, that for too long (CENTURIES!) has been ignored, especially by the medical community, hush hushed, and even vilified.
As a menopause health and hormone coach, I’ve watched with optimism over the past decade, the shifting perceptions as well as debunked myths, and misconceptions, the newfound empowerment, and the recently recognized wisdom of the menopausal woman. There is much to embrace and celebrate!
Enter….The Menopause Retreat:
In my recent article entitled, “When Menopausal Women Travel Together, Magic Happens”, I shared about my trip to Tuscany with a group of six women. The article centered on how women can live longer and healthier lives by maintaining friendships with other women.
And how these friendships can be the key to happiness in older women. I shared that “we should be treating this nourishing act of female socialization as just as important as exercise and nutrition for our health and longevity”. A menopause retreat can provide this, and so much more!
“about 85% of women report symptoms of varying types and severity”
For many women during this transitional phase of life, symptoms of hormone balance may arise. Statistically, during menopause, about 85% of women report symptoms of varying types and severity.
Some of these symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal atrophy, low libido, hair loss, mood swings, depression, and anxiety. The first phase is called Perimenopause when the ovaries are releasing fewer eggs, and hormones are fluctuating. The average age a woman begins perimenopause is about 45-46 and can last anywhere from 2-10 and up to 15 years.
These are the years leading up to menopause, which is actually just one day (the 12-month anniversary of a woman’s last period). Once a woman reaches menopause, the very next day she is considered post-menopausal and will be for the rest of her life. This is NOT a time that should be ignored, as post-menopausal women are at greater risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and dementia.
Surprisingly, a recent study concluded that 73% of women don’t seek help and support for their menopausal symptoms. One possible reason is that doctors are undereducated in women’s health, especially when it comes to menopause. Another may be the stigma that surrounds this time of a woman’s life. Ageism, sexism, and medical misogyny are alive and well.
Women are crying out for support, resources, and guidance.
“These types of experiences are increasingly becoming popular”
A Menopause Retreat can provide a woman with support and positivity as well as a health and wellness experience unlike any other. These types of experiences are increasingly becoming popular, from local getaways to international experiences, menopause retreats are exactly what women have been craving.
