Style Confidence: Elysha Lenkin
If we were in your bedroom — peeking inside your closet —could you easily pick out 10 pieces you love?
Feel Uninspired By Our Clothes:
From my experience as a personal stylist who’s worked with countless women, spending hours in their closets, I can say that most are settling with their wardrobes. But here’s what’s really happening when we choose to settle.
When we’re rummaging through our wardrobes, and feel uninspired by our clothes, it drains our energy. And if we do this everyday, it takes a huge toll, leaving us depleted for the things that matter:
“when there’s a discrepancy between who you are and what you wear – people aren’t seeing the real you.”
- Our family
- Our work
- And most importantly, ourselves!
Plus, when there’s a discrepancy between who you are and what you wear – people aren’t seeing the real you.
That’s why you’re overlooked for opportunities — they can’t see your greatness! So, why do women settle for clothes they don’t love? There are two main reasons: impatience and laziness. Let’s look at each reason and I’ll share how to overcome both.
1. Impatience
Creating a wardrobe you love takes time and effort, and the reality is that many of us simply don’t have the patience to curate a wardrobe that perfectly matches our style. It’s like trying to complete a puzzle without all the pieces. Sometimes, we end up settling for an item that’s almost right, but not quite perfect. We convince ourselves that it’s good enough, even though it’s not 100% what we wanted because we don’t think we’ll find anything better.
The key is to stay persistent and be resourceful with what you have in the meantime. For example, if you can’t find the perfect dress for an upcoming event, wear a dress that’s already in your closet and keep looking for something better for the next occasion.
2. Laziness
Let’s be real, it’s a hassle to build a wardrobe we love! So if the first reason we settle is because we don’t think we’ll find something better, the second reason is that we can’t be bothered to look. It’s too much work! I know many women who still wear bras that are over a decade old. Even though these bras may be in a sorry state, they choose to tolerate them because they don’t feel like shopping for new ones.
Just like anything with value in your life, it takes dedication to upgrade your wardrobe. But considering the fact that your clothing impacts your mood, confidence, and how others perceive you — don’t you think it’s worth it to put in the effort?
“Strive for that feeling in your future style and don’t accept anything less!”
Break The Habit:
To stop settling for clothes that you don’t love, you need to know precisely what you want! This means having clarity on your personal preferences and what works for your style. Once you have a clear vision — the next step is simple: don’t settle for anything less!
When I’m working with my clients and we create a top notch outfit, we use that look to set the bar for their style. We won’t settle for anything below that standard!
Recall an outfit you once loved and remember the confidence it brought you. Strive for that feeling in your future style and don’t accept anything less! It takes time and effort to define and refine your personal style, but the end result is a wardrobe that truly represents you and makes you feel empowered in every outfit.
Now, it’s truth time! If we peeked inside your closet right now, how many items would we see that you love?
