The best jeans are worth talking about. Does high rise or mid rise work best?
Should I wear a fashionable wide leg jean or is that going to make me look shorter? Are bootleg and skinny jeans out now and if so, can I still wear them? Oh and what tops do I wear with what jeans. Â
These are just a few jeans questions I have been asked recently. I know… it’s a lot. To make it simple, I’m going to break it up into two parts.Â
In part one I’ll share how to choose your perfect rise of jean since being petite in our 20’s was very different from being petite in our 50’s. In our 50’s it isn’t just about wanting to look taller, but also about de-emphasizing the new found mid section.Â
In part two I’ll talk about the different styles and cuts and how to choose your perfect jean for your body shape.Â
“In our 50’s it isn’t just about wanting to look taller, but also about de-emphasizing the new found mid section.”
Mid Rise Or High Rise:
Mid Rise:
What is mid rise to you, may be high or low rise for someone else depending on your body shape. Essentially mid rise will sit on or just below your belly button.
This can be really good for de-emphasizing your tummy and giving you a bit of support without the discomfort. But it is important that your waistband isn’t digging into you as that can give you the ‘muffin top’ effect. Some stretch in the denim will help this to be more comfy and work to give you some hold. Â
What To Wear With A Mid Rise Jean:
If your mid rise jeans fit you perfectly, you will be getting some tummy support which allows you to wear shorter tops with shape. Beware of big, baggy, shapeless tops.
They can make you look bigger than you are. Opt for tops that shape your curves in lengths that end about two inches below your waistband, or if you feel comfy, tucked in tops will make your legs look longer.
Best Jeans Power Tip:
Remember that stretch denim is going to stretch quite a lot. Be sure that your jeans are a little on the tight side when you first buy them so they don’t lose shape and give you saggy bum a few wears down the line.
High Rise:
High rise is great for making your legs look longer! But there are some things to consider.Â
Best Jeans Comfort:
If the denim has no stretch, it is very likely that your jeans will feel super uncomfortable. Even a little stretch will go a long way toward comfort. Â
“Remember that stretch denim is going to stretch quite a lot.”
Do they make your tummy look bigger or give you a little hold? Depending on the style and shape, a high rise can either do wonders to give you some tummy hold or they can make your tummy pooch out. There is no one hard and fast rule with this as each woman’s body is different. In this case, I would encourage you to try on a few options and see what works for you. Â
What To Wear With A High Rise Jean:
If you are getting support from a high rise, tucking in your tops may work wonders to give you shape and make your legs look longer. If tucked in doesn’t give you the coverage you are looking for, opt for shapely shorter tops that end just below the widest point of your tummy. Tops that are too long and baggy will shorten your legs and make your whole body look wider.
Best Jeans Power Tip:
If you are considering a style of jeans that has no stretch, chances are you will have to size up. So don’t let the size label deter you from your best jeans. Just choose the size that fits the best and cut out the size tag if you don’t like the number.
