Midlife Matters: Diane Amelia Read
One of the best ways to reclaim your hormone health after menopause is to detox your liver.
The recent PBS documentary, The (M) Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause, opened my eyes to how some of the physical symptoms I’ve been living with aren’t simply “age-related” but are likely long-term repercussions of menopause.
This realization is shifting my approach to wellness. Instead of accepting these discomforts as inevitable, I’ve started focusing on lifestyle changes that support hormone balance.
Exercise, stress reduction, well-chosen supplements, and hormone-friendly nutrition are first lines of defense. Cleaning house a little can provide a strong foundation to support changes so I’m starting with a liver detoxification. Here’s why …
“Exercise, stress reduction, well-chosen supplements, and hormone-friendly nutrition are first lines of defense.”
The Liver Is Key to Hormone Balance:
The liver is the body’s primary detox organ, filtering toxins and metabolizing hormones. For women over 50, maintaining a healthy liver is critical because hormonal imbalances can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, and on and on. When the liver is overburdened by toxins, its ability to regulate hormones diminishes, exacerbating these issues.
Three Tips To Help Detox Your Liver:
1. Focus on Organic, Whole Foods:
Eating organic produce reduces the toxin load on your liver, making it easier for it to function effectively. However, organic foods can be spendy. If buying all organic isn’t feasible, prioritize the Dirty Dozen—the 12 most pesticide-laden fruits and vegetables—and opt for conventional options from the Clean 15, which are less likely to contain pesticide residue.
Dirty Dozen (To Buy Organic When Possible):
Strawberries, spinach, kale, collard and mustard greens, grapes, peaches, pears, nectarines, apples, bell and hot peppers, cherries, blueberries, green beans.
Tip: In supermarkets, look for PLU codes starting with “9” on produce labels. These indicate USDA-certified organic products.
Clean 15 (Safer to Buy Conventional):
Avocados, sweet corn, pineapple, onions, papaya, sweet peas (frozen), asparagus, honeydew melon, kiwi, cabbage, watermelon, mushrooms, mango, sweet potatoes, carrots.
2. Incorporate Liver-Friendly Foods:
Who knew? Certain foods naturally support liver detoxification. For example:
Cruciferous Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts contain compounds that help the liver process toxins.
Citrus Fruits: Lemons and grapefruits boost detox enzymes. Start your morning with warm lemon water for a gentle cleanse.
Beets: High in antioxidants, beets help repair liver cells and improve bile flow.
3. Stay Hydrated:
Proper hydration is essential for flushing toxins through your liver and kidneys. Aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. For added benefits, try herbal teas like dandelion root or milk thistle, which support liver health.

One More Thing…
Even if you’re already mindful about your diet, it’s worth considering how your nutritional needs change post-menopause. Supporting your liver is just the first step in fueling your body differently. Incorporating whole, nutrient-dense foods that promote steady blood sugar levels, anti-inflammatory benefits, and balanced hormones can make a significant difference.
Ready? Here Are Three Specific Ways To Detox Your Liver:
1. Morning Detox Drink:
Begin your day with a warm cup of water, a squeeze of fresh lemon, and a pinch of turmeric. This simple habit can kickstart liver detoxification.
2. Add a Cruciferous Side Dish:
Pair your meals with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts or steamed broccoli. These veggies are potent allies for hormone health.
3. Snack Smart with Beets:
Try a beet hummus or roasted beet slices as a snack. They’re delicious and liver-friendly.
A Balanced Liver = Balanced Hormones:
As women over 50, we don’t have to accept fatigue, brain fog, or weight gain as inevitable. By focusing on what we eat and how we nourish our bodies, we take back control. Detoxifying your liver clears the way for better hormone metabolism, helping you feel more energetic and balanced. Supporting your liver with hormone-friendly nutrition isn’t just about easing menopause symptoms … it’s about empowering your body to thrive.
Begin with a few consistent new habits. Start with a simple detox drink, make informed choices about produce, and be proactive with liver-friendly foods. Your body … and your hormones …will thank you.
