5 Skin Care Trends That Have Stood The Test Of Time

Sheryl Wilson August 2022

Beauty In And Out: Sheryl Wilson

I was just researching and thinking about what great info I wanted to share with you about youthifying your skin.

The Not So Newest Trends In Skincare:

I came across an article about the “newest skin care trends” and I had to laugh just a wee bit! Dr. Victor Witten, a world renown Dermatologist to the stars in the 1960s, was the one who developed the art of exfoliation. He taught his patients that if you do this integral step daily, your newest skin cells would turnover more quickly, the skin would immediately appear more youthful.

And the skin will be able to absorb serums, moisturizers, and night replenishers. Because if you don’t exfoliate, all of the treatments you have invested in, will sit on top of the skin and GO NOWHERE

“THE BONUS? Makeup would also go on more smoothly and last longer!”

THE BONUS? Makeup would also go on more smoothly and last longer!

Optimize Your Overall Beauty:

The founder of the skincare line, I represent, as National Beauty Director was mentored by Dr. Witten and we have had so many firsts. Such as being cruelty free since the 70’s; integrating antioxidants since the 80’s; and introducing the first internal and external concept of optimizing your overall beauty. Which includes health through combining supplementation with your daily morning and evening regime. The first to introduce a sunblock into a moisturizer in the 80’s as well!

The word trend to me, feels like something temporary. What do skin care trends really mean? Conforming to something that may be popular right now, but may not always be there. We have all done that! You know everything makes its way back. Cookies for example. Wait a minute! They’ve never gone away! Thank you, God!!!

Newest Brands:

The newest skin care brands are just now introducing anti-oxidants, sunblock’s, exfoliation, anti-inflammatory ingredients, as if they have never been heard of before? Really?! All of those have been around, since the late 70’s early 80’s!

At that time, most of the ladies in the retail stores were sold foundation, lipstick, perfume, and an occasional moisturizer. I was talking anti-oxidants, anti-aging, cruelty free skin care, moisturizer with sunblock, alpha and beta hydroxy’s to exfoliate, makeup as an extension of skin care to treat the skin.

“First, skin definitely begins from within!”

Suggestion: do the research, before you invest in skincare products. Listen to what “they” say the “trends” are (you are going to be more savvy now) and make sure you have someone that is highly trained and knows how to answer every question you ask and has many questions of their own about you!

I know how intelligent you all are, but there is so much to understand about effective skincare. The five steps of skin care, and how to use, when to use, how much to apply, where to use it, what areas to avoid ,and finally why you are using it! If you don’t have a person to explain all of this, it will unfortunately not be a successful program for you.

Healthy skin definitely begins from within! It’s all about hormones, (women and men). Your stress level, your diet, your alcohol consumption, water intake, travel schedule, medical conditions, and medications all count too. What you see on the outside is a reflection of the inside.

Skin Care Trends That Aren’t So Trendy:

1. Cruelty Free:

I just asked Google to see how accurate they were with these exact words “what year was the first cruelty free skin care line introduced”? Answer? 1990. (Two national brands stopped testing on animals)! Wrong answer! It was 1979! I was there and those brands did not make the initial introduction.

“more consumers are turning to clinically proven science-based skincare”

2. Science Based Skincare:

In today’s world, more consumers are turning to clinically proven science-based skincare. Did this trend just begin? Science based is not new. It has been around for years and years, as to how clinical studies prove ingredients effective!

3. Facial Masques:

One of the most asked for current “trends”? Facial Masques! I was touting deep cleansing and microscopic peeling of aged epidermal skin cells in 1979!  An all-inclusive Facial Masque is the key to making everything else in your skincare line perform! You must unclog blockage and exfoliate aged epidermal cells (dead skin) to reveal the more youthful skin, so that it may be nourished.

4. Anit-Inflammatory Skin Care:

Another important trend? Anti-Inflammatory skin care! Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme found in all living cells. It is not only one of the most powerful antioxidants along with its partner Catalase, it is also an anti-inflammatory. In skin care, it is traditionally derived from a proprietary form of a cantaloupe type melon.

You’ve all heard of the power of the “melon” from a celebrity model skincare line, marketing it in the last few years as if it were a new discovery. Not! SOD has been around since 1982! Speaking of antioxidants, the sacred lotus seed (not the blossom) is one of the most intensive antioxidants that ever existed; containing a DNA protein repairing enzyme able to resist and defy aging! I was talking about this in again 1991!

5. Minimalist Skin Care:

Okay let’s investigate one more “trend”. Minimalist skin care, meaning just a few products to achieve great results. All it takes is five very simple steps to youthful, gorgeous, healthy skin. And we all want that, right?  The five daily steps? Cleanse and Exfoliate, Nourish, Protect and Replenish!  C’mon! Let’s do this thing!!!
