Food For Your Soul: Dawn McGee
Whether we’re thinking about it or not, every decision we make in the present impacts the future. Don’t underestimate the power of your healthy choices!
5 Tips For Today To Create A Healthy Tomorrow:
And it isn’t just about the big things. Even the small choices you make everyday matter. If your 2024 goals include investing in a healthier future, I hope these tips will help you get there.
1. Stay Hydrated:
We hear all the time that hydration is important, but are you taking it seriously? Hydrating affects your immune system, your digestive health, and all of the other things that your body does to keep you alive. After all, we’re mostly made of water, right?
“They restore balance to your systems and energize you.”
Adding electrolytes to your water can be an important part of hydrating. They restore balance to your systems and energize you. They’re also vital to muscle health!
2. Start Strength Training:
Recent studies have highlighted a powerful secret to aging well: strength training. Whatever your preferred exercise method, it’s important to incorporate weight-bearing activities. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated! You can use your own body weight for strength training.
If you’re new to strength training or if you’re working with any complex health challenges, make sure to ask a trainer for some support to get you started. Otherwise, you can find plenty of beginner strength training exercises available for free online.
3. Incorporate Cardio:
You can’t live a long, healthy life without caring for your heart health. That means you need to include cardio in your exercise routine. You don’t have to start running marathons – just add some movement to your routine that increases your heart rate. Some days, also add in interval training -– where you alternate high intensity segments with lower intensity segments. Keeping your muscles guessing will help you bust through plateaus.
4. Reduce Your Stress:
It’s the ever-present sidekick in our fast-paced lives. Chronic stress and pain often go hand in hand, creating a cycle that’s detrimental to our long-term health. Breaking this cycle is crucial for healthy aging.
Find the activities in your life that help you reduce stress. Exercise, whether it’s a heart-pumping workout or a serene yoga session, will release endorphins, mitigate stress and, surprisingly, reduce pain. Practices like meditation, stretching, yoga, and tai chi can take the edge off stress. Personally, I find a chilly winter walk with all my stay-warm gear to be a powerful stress-buster. It gives me space from the tasks of my day, and shifts my mindset towards the positive. Just find what works for you, and make time for it (yes, put it on your calendar like any other important appointment!)
“The moments of indulgence are part of the joy of living.”
5. Be Kind to Yourself:
No beating yourself up allowed! When I talk about every choice mattering, that includes choosing to live joyfully. The moments of indulgence are part of the joy of living. And happiness is an important part of a healthy life. It’s not about how many times you stumble; it’s about how many times you rise again, striving for consistency and small improvements each day. Don’t compare your health journey to anyone else’s. Everyone starts from a different spot, so make sure to meet yourself where you are and go from there. I’ve found this to be especially true because most of my clients have complex health challenges.
So give yourself grace. Enjoy the little moments. Make the small changes that can change your life for the better. And live a full, beautiful, healthy life.
