How Common Everyday Phrases May Be Sabotaging You

How Common Everyday Phrases May Be Sabotaging You

Kavita Ahuja March 2023 1

It’s My Time Now: Kavita Ahuja

I was recently reminded of many of the phrases that we, as a society, have grown up with. Phrases that unknowingly have influenced our lives in one way or another.

“Another popular phrase that many of us may have grown up with, is this: “I’ll believe it when I see it!””

“Money doesn’t grow on trees.” What does that really mean? This phrase assumes that it requires effort to earn money and it is limited, so you must be careful how you spend it! This outlook, often imposed upon us when we were children, assumes a viewpoint of lack, versus that of abundance.

What if we were, instead, to view money as a form of energy, which is infinitely abundant and available to us all, if we allow it into our lives with no resistance?

As Abraham Hicks suggests: “The attraction of money has nothing to do with your ability to earn it. It has only to do with your wanting and believing in your worthiness to receive it.”

Everyday Phrases Need To Be Questioned:

Another popular phrase that many of us may have grown up with, is this: “I’ll believe it when I see it!” How many times have you heard that before? What does that really mean?

This phrase causes us to approach life with a skeptical or negative mindset. If we believe this is true, we may be more likely to overlook opportunities and to miss out on experiences that could enrich our lives.

Over the last several years I have tried to turn this phrase on its head and instead say: “I’ll see it when I believe it.” In other words, if we believe that something is possible, we are more likely to see opportunities, and to take action to make it a reality.

Our beliefs shape our reality – not the other way around!

As women in midlife, we may feel stuck or stagnant in our current situation and believe that there is nothing more that we can do to change our circumstances. I certainly believed that many years ago, and you also may feel that way. Yet, I slowly began to shift my thoughts, despite the many obstacles that seemed to be in my way. Then things began to change!

Going Through A Transition:

As Wayne Dyer wrote – “If we want to change our lives, we need to change our thoughts first!

“It’s up to us to act upon them!”

If you are uncertain about your future, and are going through a transition, whether that be in your career or other aspects of your life, the first step is to change your mindset. We need to let go of these everyday phrases that have been embedded into our belief system. Phrases which causes us to limit ourselves. We need to start questioning – are these phrases and beliefs really true, or can we flip them on their heads?

When we begin to change our thoughts, we become more open to possibilities around us. And then uncanny things begin to appear in our lives – only if we are open to receiving them!

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with a brilliant idea and wondered – where did that come from? It’s because when we sleep, our thoughts are not cluttered. And therefore we are more open to receiving the signals around us. It’s up to us to act upon them!

So how can we practically apply the concept, “I’ll see it when I believe it” into our lives?

Create A Vision For Yourself That You Truly Believe In:

Why do many people have such a hard time visualizing? It’s because while they are visualizing and thinking about what they really want, they focus instead on what they do not have now. Instead, we should have faith that if we really want something, we will receive it, when the time is right! We should focus on the positives in our everyday phrases.

The best time to visualize is when your mind is quiet, and you are in a positive state of being. This could be first thing in the morning, or whenever your mind is quiet any time during the day. If, while you are visualizing or meditating, you catch yourself doubting that belief, then it may not be the best time. One must be in a positive mood to receive. So, do whatever it takes to get you there – take a nap, take a walk, listen to music!

“But if we don’t truly believe those affirmations – it will not be effective.”

Use Positive Affirmations As Everyday Phrases:

If we use positive affirmations, we will begin to feel better. And when we feel better, we are open to more possibilities. But if we don’t truly believe those affirmations – it will not be effective.

For example, if our goal is to start a business, we could repeat affirmations such as “I am capable of starting a successful business”. Or “I have the skills and knowledge to make my business thrive.”

We must believe, however, that these affirmations are actually true – otherwise we are just repeating them for the sake of it, with no real consequence. Again, it is about being in a positive state to really believe these affirmations are true.

Recognize How We Are Feeling:

Thoughts become things, and it is so important to also recognize how we are feeling. When we use everyday phrases without thought we may be doing ourselves a disservice. On the other hand, if we feel happy, positive, grateful, and rested – then we will raise our positive vibrations and are more open to receiving.

Remember – It’s ok to question those age-old phrases that we may have grown up with! Let’s ask ourselves – What is at the root of them, and how can we flip them around to improve our lives moving forward?

As Wayne Dyer so famously wrote: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
