Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
When perimenopause hit me, the body changes felt like they came overnight.
One minute I felt great and the next I had an extra three inches around my belly. Seriously… I’m not just saying that. I measured. I tried every lifestyle change I could possibly think of, but still my favorite go to leather pants I bought in Italy, were no where close to zipping up. My bras also started to feel so tight that I couldn’t wait to take them off. So I took my bra measurements and found I had gone up a cup size.
“I used to secretly envy the women I styled who had a little more curve. Now, I’m the one with curves.”
Body Shape Changes During Perimenopause And Menopause:
Okay, so there was something good in all this. I had always wanted to be just one cup size bigger. And now I am.
As a designer and stylist who tries on clothes all the time, I started to take notes on which clothes no longer fit and why. Because this is not about weight; this is about body shape. I realized that with my increase in cup size, my hips were more curvy now too and my waist was looking a little more defined.
I have always been very straight up and down. I used to secretly envy the women I styled who had a little more curve. Now, I’m the one with curves. I then started to think of the styles I used to want to wear that would look great on me if only I was a little more curvy. Bingo!
Focus On The Good:
I started trying on the styles I used to long to wear and found they look so good now. So, instead of focusing on the leather pants that no longer fit, maybe it was time to shift my focus to the things I do look good in now.
This opened up a whole new world to me. I dug out all the ‘look better on curvier girls’ clothes that I seldom wore and added them to my rotation.
” Instead of focusing on what you can’t wear, focus on what you can.”
I realized just how powerful this mind shift can be. Instead of focusing on what you can’t wear, focus on what you can.
Clothes That Look Good On The Body:
Wearing clothes that look good on the body you have now can truly shift how you feel about the body you live in. Perimenopause and menopause are both tumultuous times, and they are great opportunities to become more truly ourselves.Â
So maybe it’s time to start celebrating that in all the ways. Our bodies included.
