Midlife Matters: Linda Butler
How do we rewrite our life script and embrace our midlife freedom?
Ever feel like you’ve been living a life scripted by someone else, cast in a role you didn’t audition for, chasing milestones that you never quite measure up to? You’re not alone. So many of us, as high-achieving women, were given a checklist on how to “succeed” in life. But who wrote this script, and why should we keep playing along?
Midlife Freedom – The Myth Of Chasing Milestones:
We’ve been told that hitting all the right marks in the right order—career, partner, house, kids, financial security, retirement—will bring fulfillment. Yet here we are at midlife, exhausted from the race, questioning why the goalposts keep moving. What if instead of seeing our life as a race, we view it as a road trip filled with scenic detours, wrong turns, and maybe a flat tire or two? You can slow down, speed up, or take a new turn. Every twist and turn makes the story richer, more textured, and uniquely yours. Your life – as an adventure, not a to-do list.
“Living authentically means questioning these lies and recognizing that no single path suits everyone.”
The Great Imposter Syndrome Hoax:
What often holds us back from a life of adventure? Imposter syndrome—the voice that whispers, “Who do you think you are?” whenever you dream bigger or step outside the lines. It’s the voice that says you’re not enough, or not worthy. But what if the problem isn’t you? What if the real imposters are the expectations you never agreed to—the ones trapping you in a role that doesn’t fit you?
Living authentically means questioning these lies and recognizing that no single path suits everyone. One-size-fits-all is a myth. It’s about choosing your own values and defining success on your terms. Give yourself permission to make choices that resonate with your true self, not the version society has spent years trying to shape you in to.
Midlife, The Perfect Time To Rip Up The Prescribed Life Script:
Midlife often gets a bad rap, portrayed as a decline into obscurity. But here’s the truth – it’s actually the perfect time to finally be unapologetically yourself! Think of it as a plot twist—the moment you realize you’ve been living someone else’s life and decide to change the narrative.
Maybe you’ve been playing by the rules, checking off all the boxes, and now you see the rulebook is outdated. This is your moment to create your own plan. Want to start a new career? Go for it. Take that dance class? Let’s go! Ready to leave corporate politics behind and start your own business? Heck yes!
Midlife is your chance to surprise everyone, including yourself. Ask: *What do I really want?* This is the time to be bold, brave, and maybe even rebellious.
Breaking Free—One Step At A Time:
Reinventing yourself doesn’t require quitting your job, selling everything, and moving abroad—unless you want to! It can start with small steps that bring you closer to a life that feels like your own.
Say “no” to what drains you or “yes” to what lights you up. Try something new that scares you, or let go of something old that no longer serves you. Like clearing out a closet, remove everything that doesn’t fit or feel good, making space for things that make you feel fabulous.
Owning Your Journey (Without Guardrails):
Here’s a secret: no one has it all figured out. Everyone is doing the best they can. Stop worrying about doing it “right.” There is no right. There is only *your* way.
Claim your power by saying, “This is my life, and I choose how to live it.” Every decision to follow your intuition, honor your truth, and embrace your unique self brings you closer to a life that feels authentically yours. Isn’t that the point?
“Try something new that scares you, or let go of something old that no longer serves you.”
Drop The Life Script, Create Your Own Adventure:
So, here’s your invitation: Rip up the old script. Toss the rulebook out the window. Forget chasing milestones that don’t resonate. This is your time to explore, dream, and expand. There is no “right” way to live your life—only the way that makes your heart sing.
You’re not too late, not behind, and certainly not an imposter. You’re exactly where you need to be, with the pen in your hand, ready to write your next chapter. And trust me, you can make it one heck of an adventure story.
One step at a time, start building a life that feels truly yours. Forget the timelines. Forget the “shoulds.” Chase what makes your heart beat faster, your laugh louder, your smile wider. La Dolce Vita. The best part? You get to make it up as you go.
