Midlife Matters: Diane Amelia Read
Let’s talk Segment Intending from Esther Hicks.
Confession. I’m late to the party. Maybe you’ve been to an Esther Hicks & Abraham live event or even joined them on a cruise. Both are now on my must-do list but prior to January, Esther & Abraham were unknown to me. Damn, have I been making up for lost time!
Every day I listen a bit on YouTube. I hear recordings from last month and from last century. The consistency and relevancy of the messages are impressive, and in a fairly short time, these teachings have brought ease to my life.
To be clear, it hasn’t made the details of my life easy, but it has helped me learn to navigate it all with ease.
Stop The World, I Want To Get Off:
On any given day, we have a dozen plates spinning while tap dancing on a platform of changing roles, bodies, and identities. It can be a mad scramble to reach for well-being.
“Segment intending” to the rescue! This Esther & Abraham practice is designed to help you intentionally direct your thoughts and energy toward desired outcomes in your life.
“Segment intending is a process of consciously setting a desired outcome for each chapter of your day.”
What is Segment Intending?
Segment intending is a process of consciously setting a desired outcome for each chapter of your day. A “segment” is any part of your day with a distinct beginning and end, such as a meeting, a commute, a conversation, or morning routine.
By setting clear intentions before you begin a segment, you can align your thoughts, feelings, expectations, and actions with your desired outcomes. This downright ninja mindset hack will surprise and delight you, especially as your practice of it increases.
It’s the opposite of micromanaging. Unlike some types of visualization, segment intending works best when you take a big step back from the details.
Three Steps To Take For Segment Intending:
1. Identify The Segment:
A segment can be as short as your shower or as long as a workday. The key is to recognize when one theme ends and another begins. By breaking your day into segments or scenes, you gain more opportunities to reset your intentions. And your mood.
2. Set That Intention:
Once you’ve identified a segment, take a moment to form a clear and positive intention for it. Consider what you want to experience or achieve during this time. It can be related to your emotions, actions, or outcomes, and ensures that you approach the segment with purpose and an open heart.
Keep it general. For instance, before a meeting or phone call, write or think …
“I love it when communication flows easily and everyone feels heard. I feel expanded by opinions beyond my own. It’s such a fun process to collaborate. I love it when everyone leaves a conversation feeling uplifted and satisfied.”
Notice there’s nothing like, “I will make her see my point of view and finally agree with me.” Nope. That’s way too specific. And possibly mean. Stay general with your intending and let that positive energy inform the details.
3. Visualize The Desired Outcome:
After setting your intention, imagine your intentions coming to be … then practice feeling it. Visualization helps to solidify your intention and align your thoughts with the positive energy you wish to attract.
“This practice can turn a simple action into a mindful act of self-love.“
Three Ways To Benefit From Segment Intending:
1. Enhancing Self-Care Rituals:
Transform your daily self-care rituals into moments of deep nourishment and rejuvenation.
For instance, before starting your evening skincare routine, set an intention to fully relax and enjoy the process. Imagine your skin glowing and visualize your mind unwinding as you apply each product. This practice can turn a simple action into a mindful act of self-love.
2. Navigating Social Interactions:
Social interactions can sometimes be challenging, especially if you’re dealing with difficult conversations or unfamiliar situations. Segment intending can help you approach these interactions with confidence and ease.
Before attending a social event, try setting an intention to feel confident, connected, and at ease. Visualize yourself engaging in meaningful conversations, enjoying the company of others, and feeling festive inside. This will help you enter the event with a positive mindset, making it more enjoyable, connected, and fulfilling. And if someone’s not on that wavelength, it becomes easier to walk away from that conversation.
3. Improving Focus And Productivity:
With the many distractions that come with daily life, staying focused and productive can be a challenge. Segment intending can help you stay on track and accomplish your goals.
Before starting a work project or tackling your to-do list, set an intention to be focused, efficient, and clear-minded. Visualize yourself completing tasks with ease and feeling satisfied. This will help you approach your work with greater clarity, purpose, and joy. With that combo, you know you’ll increase your productivity.
This Segment Is Concluding:
Segment intending is a simple, easy, and powerful tool that can help you live with greater self-alignment and satisfaction. Be the movie director of your life by breaking your day into “scenes” and setting clear intentions for each one. Whether you’re enhancing your self-care, navigating life with other humans, maxing productivity, or something more, segment intending offers a practical way to harness your inner power to create the focused and fulfilling life of ease you desire.
