8 Reasons Your Weight Loss Motivation Is Gone And The 5 Essential Questions To Get You Back On Track

8 Reasons Your Weight Loss Motivation Is Gone And The 5 Essential Questions To Get You Back On Track

Permanent Weight Loss: Dr. Barbara L Katz

Are you disappointed in yourself because it’s already September, and you haven’t lost the weight you planned to lose this year?

You decided in January that this year was the year you would finally reach your desired weight (or come close) and get control of your overeating. However, you’ve noticed your motivation has waned, and you’ve slipped back into many of your former eating habits.

8 Common Reasons Why You May Have Lost Your Motivation:

1. It’s too hard. It’s hard to be around friends and family and not be able to eat or drink like them.

2. You’re used to connecting with your partner and/or friends by eating with them – either at restaurants or each other’s homes. You’re uncomfortable eating or drinking differently than you used to because you’re afraid you’ll have no way to connect.

“Your excess weight has been your security blanket.”

3. You start to panic as you lose weight because you feel more vulnerable. Your excess weight has been your security blanket.

4. You’re tired of feeling deprived and you’re resentful because you can’t eat everything you want when you want to.

5. Your family or friends have noticed you are eating differently than you used to and have been giving you a hard time.

6. If you lose weight, you’ll lose your excuse for not finding a partner, a job, or happiness.

7. You’ve never kept the excess weight off before, so why even try?

8. You hate the foods or the way you “need” to eat to lose weight.

5 Questions To Ask Yourself To You Regain Your Weight Loss Motivation:

1. Why do you want to lose weight, and is that reason more important than those cookies or piece of cake?

2. How does eating too many cookies, too much pizza, or a daily handful of candy from the candy jar make your life better?

3. Is your life better when you overeat or drink three or four alcoholic drinks – or are you just numbing emotions you don’t want to feel?

“Think about how you’ll feel when you’re lighter and have more energy.”

4. Does eating ice cream daily – and weighing more than you wish – make you feel better than if you weighed less, had more energy, and ate ice cream twice a week?

5. Are those cookies, that piece of cake, or those extra potatoes worth feeling bloated, lethargic, and not liking how you look in your clothing?

Identify Your Reasons For Losing Weight:

It’s worth writing down your reasons for losing weight and making sure that losing weight is really what you desire. Think about how you’ll feel when you’re lighter and have more energy.

When you’re tempted to eat more than your body needs, make sure you like your reasons for overeating. “It tastes so good” is often a short-term reason – but long-term will only make it more difficult to reach your goals.

The more often you remind yourself why you want to lose weight and question why you want to overeat – the easier it will become to make the decisions you need to make to lose weight.  While you can eat anything and lose weight, you can’t always eat everything and lose weight.

Support Your Goals To Lose Weight:

Your choices should support your goals. If one of your goals is to lose weight, your reasons for losing must be compelling. Food and alcohol are common temptations.

To handle these temptations, frequently think about how you will eat and behave once you’ve reached and maintained your goal weight. How will you decide what and how much to eat when you’re at goal weight? Start acting like your future, thinner self – who has already reached her goal weight – today and make the decisions that will enable you to achieve your weight loss goals.
