Big Decisions After 50: A Bold, Honest Vote-Or-Voice Test

Big Decisions After 50: A Bold, Honest Vote-Or-Voice Test

Big Decisions After 50

3
VIEWS

Big decisions after 50 rarely stay private for long; the minute you say one out loud, it seems everyone you know wants a say.

Retirement. A career change. Moving. Starting a business. Big life decisions after 50 have a strange way of becoming group projects. Everyone has advice, usually because they care. But before you let all those opinions shape your next move, it helps to know who gets a voice, and who should get a vote.

When Everyone Has An Opinion About Your Next Move

Once you talk about making a big change after 50, people ask questions.

“I’m thinking about retiring.”

“Are you sure? What will you do all day?”

“I want to sell the house.”

“But you love that house!”

“I’m thinking about starting a business.”

“Aren’t you a little too old?”

Suddenly, there’s a committee, and everyone seems to have voting rights.

Why Big Decisions After 50 Turn Into A Committee Vote

After more than 30 years helping women navigate major work and life transitions, as a Business and Life Transition Coach and psychotherapist, I’ve noticed: the hardest part isn’t always knowing what you want. It’s separating what you want from what everyone also wants for you.

The people who love you most aren’t always objective because your decision may change something for them, too.

They are not being selfish. This simply means that not every opinion deserves equal weight.

5 Ways To Separate Real Advice From Everyone Else’s Opinions

1. Ask Yourself: Does This Person Have A Stake In My Decision?

Suppose you’re considering moving two hours away and your daughter says, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

She may be seeing something you’re missing.

But she may also be imagining what life would be like when Mom doesn’t conveniently live a few blocks away.

The same with retirement. Your partner may worry about money, or about having you home all day. A colleague may genuinely care about your future and be concerned about who will handle your workload.

When you listen to what people say, always notice where they’re standing when they say it, and it will give you context.

2. Separate Advice From Anxiety

There’s a difference between identifying a legitimate risk and handling someone else’s fear.

“Talk to a financial planner before retiring” is advice.

“You’ll be bored within six months” is a prediction.

“Have you researched the cost of living there?” is useful.

“I could never move to a place where I didn’t know anyone” tells you more about them than it does about your choice.

Other people’s fears can be disguised as wisdom.

Keep the information. You don’t need to keep the fear.

3. Stop Taking A Poll

This is where intelligent women can make themselves crazy.

You ask your spouse, your best friend, and another friend because you didn’t like the first friend’s answer. And then you ask someone who made a similar decision twelve years ago.

Before long, you have seven opinions, three cautionary tales, two recommendations, and more confusion than you had in the first place.

More advice does not produce a better decision. It often just produces more noise.

For a major decision, create a very small personal advisory board.

Everyone else can care about you without serving on the committee.

4. Note The Answer You’re Hoping To Hear

When you ask someone their opinion, do you really want to hear it, or are you waiting for them to say, “Do it”?

Sometimes we keep asking until we get the answer we’re looking for.

That doesn’t prove it’s the right decision. It proves you want validation, and you already know what you want to do.

Sometimes your response tells you more than the advice itself.

5. Use The Vote-Or-Voice Test

Here’s a distinction I ask myself: Who gets a vote, and who gets a voice?

Some people deserve a vote because your decision affects their lives.

Others just deserve a voice. You respect their experience or judgments, and you want to hear what they have to say, but the consequences of the decision will ultimately be yours.

Then there are those people who need neither: the neighbor who thinks women over 50 should never move abroad, the former colleague you met at the supermarket who hasn’t spoken to you in five years. Before giving weight to any opinion, decide which category to put it in.

When The Committee Leaves The Room

Big life decisions after 50 can carry heavy stakes: finances, family, relationships, work, and decades of history. Getting thoughtful advice is not a weakness; it’s decision-making.

But there’s a difference between getting concrete advice and outsourcing. And once the research is done and conversations have happened, it’s time for the committee to leave the room.

It all boils down to your decision.

Ask yourself:

How do I really feel, and what am I hearing from everyone else?

Because when you’re over 50, making a good decision isn’t about ignoring everyone else’s opinions. It’s about knowing what wisdom belongs in the room.
