Declutter To Reinvent: Cat Coluccio
Now that the holidays are over, the decorations have been packed away, and we are at the start of a brand new year, do we need decluttering tips?
5 Decluttering Tips For A Fresh Start In 2025:
Whether 2024 was a whirlwind or a steady climb, now is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and create space for new beginnings. But how do you prepare yourself for what lies ahead? It all begins with decluttering—not just your home, but your mind, your emotions and even your inbox. Ready to reset? Let’s dive into some simple but powerful steps to clear the clutter and make room for success in 2025.
1. Close the Chapter on Last Year:
Before you can fully embrace what’s next, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on last year. This is an exercise I really value doing, and one of the questions I always ask myself is: ‘What were the key lessons I learned this year?’ With 2024 being a particularly tumultuous year for myself and my family, there are lots of learnings there.
“Whatever the case, jot down what you experienced and what you learned—no filters, just raw honesty.”
Maybe you navigated unexpected challenges or found moments of joy in unlikely places. Whatever the case, jot down what you experienced and what you learned—no filters, just raw honesty.
By writing those learnings down, you give those lessons a place and free your mind from replaying past events. This exercise is about honouring your journey and preparing yourself to move forward into the new year with clarity.
2. Let Go of What’s Weighing You Down:
Holding on to regrets or old frustrations? It’s time to let them go. Easier said than done? Absolutely. But choosing forgiveness—whether it’s for others or yourself—is a powerful decluttering tool.
Think of it as mental spring cleaning. By forgiving, you’re not condoning what happened; you’re simply releasing the emotional weight tied to it. This step can be transformative and when we face the aftermath of challenging events, forgiving and letting go isn’t forgetting—it’s making space for hope and healing.
3. Create Space—Physically and Digitally:
Ever noticed how much lighter you feel after cleaning out a messy drawer? There’s a reason for that! Decluttering your physical surroundings can have a profound impact on your mental clarity. Even if you’ve already put away your Christmas décor and tidied up the house, I can almost guarantee that there will be a space needing some decluttering maintenance. As well, as personal tip here: small physical tasks like this are brilliant for keeping you sane when you are concerned about things you can’t control. Let’s just say that I have done a lot of decluttering over the past two weeks in between messages to my daughter who lives in LA – a long way from New Zealand!
“Decluttering your physical surroundings can have a profound impact on your mental clarity.”
Try this: tackle one small area each day for a week. Take it one step at a time—whether it’s your closet, your email inbox, or your home office. By the end of the week, you’ll not only have a cleaner space but also a clearer mind. And as Marie Kondo would say, “Does it spark joy?” If not, maybe it’s time to let it go.
4. Filter the Noise:
We live in a world of constant noise—from overflowing email inboxes to unsolicited advice from well-meaning friends. I actually write about how inhibiting ‘noise’ impacts your productivity in my original 21 hacks book, 21 Hacks to ROCK your Life!. One of the most powerful ways to declutter your mind is by filtering what you allow into your life.
Take a digital detox: unsubscribe from emails that no longer serve you, mute notifications, and set boundaries around your time and energy. Once you filter out the noise, you’ll have more mental bandwidth to focus on what truly matters to you as you head into the new year.
5. Cultivate Gratitude:
Instead of focusing on what didn’t go right last year, shift your perspective toward gratitude. Studies have shown that practicing gratitude can increase happiness and reduce stress. Take a few minutes each day to write down three things you’re thankful for. They don’t have to be grand as oftentimes, the small things are what matter most – a cup of tea of a morning with your partner, a glass of wine and a laugh with your bestie, a walk along the beach with your dog…
Gratitude not only helps declutter your mind but also sets a positive tone for the days ahead. “Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.” — Eileen Caddy.
Ready to Refresh Your Life?
Decluttering your mind and space isn’t just about tidying up—it’s about creating room for the life you want to live. Whether it’s letting go of emotional baggage, clearing your home, or simply embracing gratitude, each step brings you closer to a clearer, more peaceful you.
This year, give yourself the gift of a fresh start. Make room for what truly matters, and who knows? Despite its horrendously rocky start, 2025 just might be your best year yet.
