Fashion accessories can be key!
You go to your closet and rifle through your pieces of clothing, trying to pull together an outfit. You pick a few pieces and throw them on, but it still doesn’t feel like “a look”, it doesn’t feel complete.
It may be because you are shopping for the wrong things.
I don’t mean that you are buying the wrong pieces of clothing, if you are a student of style and color, you probably are getting that part correct. But, are you buying the right things to finish the look?
To Look Your Best, You Need Fashion Accessories!!
Accessories can:
- Bring together colors in an outfit
- Add interest
- Make a look composed of generic pieces feel more your personal style
- Bring the eye to areas you want to accentuate and away from others
- Make a look feel more modern or up to date
- Dress up an outfit
- Frame your face
- Make an outfit feel more seasonal
- Express your feelings
- Make an outfit feel more event-specific
“Check out how the accessories make these looks.”
Too often, accessories are an after-thought, rather than part of planning your wardrobe. For them to play a vital role and accomplish the above, we need to give them thought and shop for them with intention.
So what does that look like?
When we build a clothing wardrobe, we begin with basic pieces, in our best colors and base neutrals, from there, we add other colors. The same should stand when building our accessories wardrobe.
For The Basics:
- JEWELRY-Simple hoops in your best metal color (gold or silver), pearls, diamond stud earrings, etc.
- SHOES– Leather flats or loafers in your best neutral, a sneaker in one of your best colors, leather boots in your best neutral, and sandals in your best neutral. If you dress up a lot, include pumps or a heeled sandal in your best neutral.
- BAGS-Again, a nice leather bag in your best neutral never fails. Choose a bag size and shape based on your needs and style.
- BELTS-1 or 2 simple leather belts in your best neutrals.
Adding The Extras To Your Fashion Accessories:
- JEWELRY-expand in your color palette and play with materials. If your style is boho, look to beads and natural elements. For classics, stick to gold or silver, with variations on pearls, and simple hoops or buttons in your palette colors. For edgy gals, add in fun with oversized pieces in metals, acrylic, and wood in bold colors.
- SHOES-Adding additional flats or loafers in your best colors is a great move. Also look for different types of shoes in your best neutrals or colors, like a Mary Jane or T strap. Look for details like heel height and type, shoe material, and embellishments like chains, zippers, and bows to bring in your style and personality.
“SCARVES, These go in and out of style and can look dated if not trending.”
- BAGS-Consider adding specialty bags, like totes, wristlets, and evening bags, or a fun clutch for dinner out. Again, choose from your best neutrals, colors, or metal.
- BELTS-Add in color and patterns, and new materials like raffia and metal.
- HATS-Consider adding hats to your accessories. Choose based on your lifestyle. If you are athletic, choose ball caps, if boho, a woven wide brim, etc.
- SCARVES-These go in and out of style and can look dated if not trending. Choose interesting fabrics and patterns in your best colors if you want to wear them.
HOT TIP: In addition to building a wardrobe of accessories, have a great way to organize the pieces. If you cannot see them, you won’t wear them. Consider spending time at the beginning of the week planning out your looks, complete with accessories. It will save lots of time on busy mornings, and you will actually style your looks.
Hair And Makeup:
The last accessory to your look is hair & makeup. Make sure to keep the vibe, color, and style of your look going from head to toe.
Build a makeup wardrobe on these same principles of basics, then extras, all in your best neutrals and palette colors, and your look will be harmonious. It’s the head-to-toe harmony that gives a woman the look of being well put together.
