Small Space Fitness: Cat Corchado
Poor posture can led to health issues.
As a movement specialist, I’ve observed a common yet overlooked issue that significantly impacts our physical and mental well-being: how we sit. In our modern lifestyle, where sitting for prolonged periods has become the norm, we must ask ourselves, “Are we sitting wrong?”
Poor Posture Can Lead To Health Issues:
Sitting for extended periods, especially with poor posture, can lead to a host of health issues. Physically, it puts a strain on your back, neck, and shoulders, leading to discomfort and, over time, chronic pain. The lack of movement can also result in weakened leg and glute muscles, contributing to a feeling of stiffness and reduced flexibility. Moreover, sitting incorrectly can cause poor circulation, leading to swelling in the legs and, in severe cases, more serious cardiovascular problems.
“Sitting all day can lead to feelings of lethargy and fatigue, making it harder to focus and stay productive.”
From a mental health perspective, the impact is just as significant. Sitting all day can lead to feelings of lethargy and fatigue, making it harder to focus and stay productive. This sedentary lifestyle is also linked to an increased risk of anxiety and depression, as physical activity is a known mood booster.
Be More Mindful:
So, what can we do to mitigate these effects? First, it’s essential to become more mindful of our posture while sitting. Ensuring that your back is straight, shoulders are relaxed but not slouched, and your feet are flat on the ground can make a significant difference. Additionally, incorporating regular breaks to stand, stretch, or walk around is crucial. Even a few minutes of movement (maybe 11 minute of movement) can help alleviate the negative impacts of sitting.
While our modern lifestyle may necessitate sitting for extended periods, being mindful of how we sit and making a conscious effort to incorporate movement into our day can greatly improve our physical and mental health. Remember, everyone has the right to feel good in their body, even when sitting!!
