Simplicity & Connection Thought Leader: Kay Newton
Want to strive towards being an eco-friendly grandmother and help leave a greener legacy for your family?
Becoming a grandmother is just around the corner for me. And as I reflect on what this new chapter will bring, I’m filled with excitement and a sense of responsibility.
10 Simple Steps On How I Plan To Be An Eco-Conscious Grandmother:
I’ve always strived to live mindfully, and now I see an opportunity to pass that love for the Earth to the next generation. These are the simple ways I plan to weave eco-consciousness into my role as a grandmother.
“I’ve always strived to live mindfully, and now I see an opportunity to pass that love for the Earth to the next generation.”
1. Embrace My Unique Grandmother Style:
Tapping into my authentic self when I become a grandmother, will blend love, laughter, and a commitment to our planet. I can imagine teaching my grandchild about the beauty of reducing, reusing, and appreciating nature. Whether we’re planting seeds or turning old things into new treasures, I’ll share the joy of living simply and sustainably.
2. Be Present and Engaged:
As I have aged, I know how important it will be to slow down and really ‘be’ there. Life moves so fast, and I want my grandchild to feel a connection with me and the Earth. I picture us taking nature walks, where we’ll explore, discover, and talk about the wonders of the world around us—moments I hope will stay with them forever.
3. Offer Support Without Overstepping:
Respecting my child’s and partner’s parenting choices, while gently sharing what I’ve learned over the years about living eco-consciously will be a key part of simplicity. Whether it’s suggesting any sustainable ‘R’ words (see below), I’ll offer advice when asked, without judgment—just support for the family and the planet.
4. Share My Wisdom and Life Experiences:
As someone privileged to have experienced the seasons change countless times, they still amaze me. I want to share these small wonders with my grandchild—the changing leaves, the stars at night, the importance of caring for our Earth. These are the magic moments I plan to pass on, hoping they’ll carry them forward into their own lives.
5. Encourage Creativity and Exploration:
I can already picture us outside, creating something beautiful with what nature provides. Crafting with leaves, painting with sticks, and building imaginary worlds in the woods—these will be the moments where I encourage creativity while deepening their connection with the natural world.
6. Be a Source of Unconditional Love and Acceptance:
One thing I know is that I want my grandchild to feel my unconditional love. But I also want them to understand that love extends beyond people—to animals, plants, and the Earth. Together, we’ll learn to respect and care for all living things, from the tiniest ant to the tallest tree.
7. Stay Technologically Savvy:
Technology will be a big part of their world, and I plan to embrace it too. But I’ll make sure to balance it with mindful, eco-friendly practices. I look forward to telling them stories of a time when handwritten letters were the way we stayed connected and encouraging them to use tech responsibly.
“Technology will be a big part of their world, and I plan to embrace it too.”
8. Prioritize Self-Care and Well-Being:
Over the years, I have learned that self-care is essential, and I want to model that for my grandchild. I’ll use natural, sustainable products that are good for both me and the planet, showing them that taking care of ourselves and our world go hand in hand.
9. Respect Boundaries and Individuality:
As a grandmother, I plan to honor my grandchild’s individuality while teaching them the importance of respecting boundaries—both personal and environmental. I want them to grow up appreciating the balance and beauty of nature, and I’ll be there to guide them in understanding this connection.
10. Celebrate the Journey:
This new role is something I’m already cherishing, even before it begins. I plan to celebrate the milestones, laugh at the little moments, and build a legacy of love and sustainability. Every step I take towards eco-conscious living is a step I hope my grandchild will follow, creating a brighter future for the generations to come.
Why not let me know your thoughts, any further advice for those of you who are already KUEL grandmothers would be greatly appreciated!
