Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
If you’re wondering how to dress to hide your menopause belly, girlfriend, you’re not alone, just don’t fall for these five style traps that actually make things worse.
I’m Tracy Gold, your menopause style expert. I’ve been designing and styling for women over 40 for more than 20 years, and as a 51-year-old perimenopausal woman myself, I know exactly what that hormonal bloat can do to your wardrobe. So let’s get real. These are the five styling mistakes that make a menopause belly stand out… and what to wear instead to feel confident, comfortable, and fabulous.
How To Dress To Hide Your Menopause Belly–Avoid These 5 Traps:
1. Going Big, Baggy, and Long to “Hide” Everything:
This is the number one trap. You feel bloated, you’re uncomfortable, and your instinct is to throw on something big and shapeless to hide it all. But let me tell you, oversized doesn’t disguise, it just adds volume everywhere.
What works instead? Clothes that give you shape. I’m not saying skin-tight, I’m saying shaped. A wrap skirt with an adjustable tie in stretch fabric? Absolute gold. You can pull it higher or lower depending on how you’re feeling that day. Pair it with a one-shoulder top, and boom—everyone’s looking at your gorgeous neckline, not your midsection. It’s distraction styling, and yes, it works like magic.
2. Squeezing into What Used to Fit:
I get it. We all have that pair of jeans or leather pants we used to love. But if they were tight before perimenopause? They’re going to feel like a torture device now. Our body shapes change. That’s not failure; it’s evolution.
Rather than mourning the old silhouette, celebrate the one you’ve got. I’ve embraced wide-leg pants that never used to suit me but now make me feel incredible. They cinch the waist, flow at the hem, and create a flattering, balanced line that doesn’t fight my belly, it works with it.
3. Believing the Lie About Pencil Skirts:
I’ve heard it so many times: “Every woman can wear a pencil skirt.” No, no, no. Pencil skirts and dresses narrow toward the hem, which makes your belly and hips look wider. Not flattering.
Now compare that to a fit-and-flare style, nips in at the waist, flares at the bottom, and suddenly your silhouette looks sculpted, not squeezed. You get shape, movement, and a whole lot more confidence.
4. Clingy Solids That Show Everything:
Solid-colored fabrics that cling in the wrong places are just cruel. I put on a dress I used to love, and suddenly every lump, bump, and panty line was on full display. Same underwear, same body, but then I switched to a printed dress, and voilà! The difference was jaw-dropping.
Print is a menopause belly’s best friend. It confuses the eye, distracts from trouble spots, and adds personality. If you do want to wear a solid color, make sure the fabric has structure and the dress has shape, no flimsy knits that hug where they shouldn’t.
5. Patch Pocket Denim (Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You):
The latest denim trend? Jeans with patch pockets right on the belly. I tried them, I really did. And I wanted to love them. But let’s be honest: those pockets draw attention exactly where we don’t want it.
Go for dark-wash jeans with clean lines and zero embellishments around the midsection. I love a high-waisted wide-leg cut that elongates the legs and skims right over the belly. They’re classic, flattering, and feel amazing, no pockets drawing a spotlight on your bloat.
