Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
If you’re wondering how to get out of a style rut over 50, it starts with reimagining what’s already hanging in your closet, no massive shopping spree required.
Let’s be real. If you’re anything like the midlife women I work with every day, you’re probably stuck in a style rut. Same old jeans. Same shapeless tops. And let’s not even talk about how many unworn pieces are hiding in your closet.
But I’ve got good news, girlfriend: you don’t have to toss your entire wardrobe to look and feel fabulous again. I’m Tracy Gold, personal stylist and designer, and I’m here to show you that small, intentional changes can make a massive impact, without breaking the bank or ditching your personal style.
How To Get Out Of A Style Rut Over 50:
First things first: getting out of a style rut at this stage of life isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about rediscovering who you are today, and dressing that woman.
Your body’s changed. Your lifestyle’s shifted. Your confidence might need a boost. That’s not a problem. That’s your power.
Here’s the mindset shift that starts it all:
Imagine your Dream Style Life.
Money is no object. You can wear anything, be any age, have any body.
What do you see?
More importantly—how do you feel?
Start there. Give your dream style three words. Feminine, flowy, romantic? Edgy, powerful, bold? Classic, chic, minimal? Don’t overthink it. Just name the vibe.
Not a words person? Head to Pinterest. Build a board. Notice what catches your eye, colors, textures, moods, not just the model’s body. You’re not looking for clones. You’re building inspiration.
Now comes the fun part…
Go Shopping—In Your Closet:
Before you hit the stores, raid your own wardrobe. Dig in and pull out anything that aligns with those three dream words. I promise you, there’s something in there you forgot you even owned. A bold top with the tag still on. A funky jacket you never knew how to style. A skirt you loved but felt “too much” in.
Take that piece. Now ask:
How can I work this into what I already wear?
Most of us have a uniform we fall back on: meh jeans, meh t-shirt, meh mood. So let’s flip the script.
Swap the boring tee for something with flair—color, shape, texture. Not ready for that? Try styling the same tee differently. Tuck it. Tie it. Add a belt. Play.
Or try this: keep the top, but upgrade your jeans. Find that one pair that hugs you in the right places, the one you forgot you bought. Add a statement earring, a bold lip, a colorful shoe. Instant upgrade.
From “Same Old” To Styled And Empowered:
Not ready to mix-and-match? Ditch the jeans-and-tee formula altogether. That dress you bought for “someday”? That skirt you thought was “too much”? That jacket you loved but never wore?
Now is the time. Layer it. Restyle it. Dress it down with sneakers or up with heels. Let it live.
And if you truly have nothing that fits or flatters anymore? That’s okay. You’ve just created a blueprint for your next shopping trip, based on your dream, your body, and your life right now.
Why This Works:
This isn’t about looking younger. It’s about feeling alive. It’s about reclaiming style as a source of joy, confidence, and creative expression.
So go. Start with one change. One color. One pair of pants that make you say, “Yes, that’s me.” You don’t need a whole new wardrobe. You just need to remember how damn fabulous you already are.
