Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
You’re about to learn how to wear bold colors and prints over 50, and girlfriend, it’s time to ditch the outdated rules that say we have to fade into the background just because we’ve hit midlife.
You may have heard stylists say that as we get older, we should avoid color and wear very little, if any, print. Basically, we’re told to just go beige. And I don’t mean beige as in a color; I mean beige as in boring. But here’s the truth: wearing bold colors and prints over 50 has nothing to do with fading into the background. It’s about standing out with confidence, flair, and joy.
If you’re ready to ditch the beige, or already have but just need fresh inspiration to play with color and print, then this guide is for you.
Why Bold Color Matters More Than Ever:
As we age, we naturally lose color in our hair, skin, and even our lips. That’s why you might find yourself saying, “I can’t leave the house without lipstick anymore.” Me too, girlfriend. And that’s exactly why wearing bold color, especially the right color for your complexion, is more important than ever. It lifts your skin, brightens your eyes, and makes you look vibrant, even without piling on makeup.
Start With Your Power Colors:
A great way to ease into color is to start with shades you already know work for you. Think about what you’re wearing when people ask if you’ve done something different with your hair or tell you you’re glowing. That’s your power color, and it’s a great foundation for bolder combos.
For me, red is a go-to. Lately, I’ve been loving how it pairs with olive green. It’s an unexpected combo, but it brings me so much joy. Playing with contrast like that not only makes your outfit more interesting, it can also work magic on your figure. In one of my favorite dresses, the olive green side panels slim my silhouette while the red adds punch and energy.
How To Wear Prints Without The Frump:
If you’re new to prints, start by choosing patterns that feature your favorite or most flattering colors. Prints are like little miracle workers; they distract from areas you’re less confident about and draw the eye where you want it to go.
I hear it all the time: “Tracy, I love that print, but what shoes do I wear with it?” If you’re not up for building a rainbow shoe collection (guilty!), stick to metallics or nude tones. A nude shoe will elongate your legs, and metallics add a little extra sparkle without clashing.
Wearing “Wrong” Colors The Right Way:
Drawn to a color that doesn’t technically suit your complexion? Don’t toss it aside. Instead, look for it in a print that includes your best shades, or wear it away from your face. Trust your instincts; if a color excites you, there’s a reason. I believe colors carry energy. If one’s calling your name, you’re probably needing that energy in your life.
Beige Doesn’t Have To Be Boring:
Let’s be honest, I tease beige a lot—but it’s not about the color itself. It’s about how you wear it. Try combining neutrals in a dynamic print or rich textures like animal print. A snakeskin pattern with blacks, browns, and creams? Yes, please. It’s all about mixing it up so it doesn’t wash you out, or bore you to tears.
How To Wear Bold Colors And Prints Over 50 Without Following Outdated Rules:
So many of the “rules” we were taught about dressing over 50 are outdated. If you’ve been clinging to the idea that you can’t wear bright colors, bold prints, or even neutrals; let those rules go. Explore. Play. Mix. Your style should bring you joy.
Until next time, remember: style doesn’t have an expiration date. Boldly go rock your color.
