Declutter To Reinvent: Cat Coluccio
The holidays have come and gone and we are have embarked on a brand new year.
No matter what happened in 2022, now is the perfect time to hit the reset button, to set yourself up for success. And, make room for new possibilities in 2023. So how do you do this? It all begins with decluttering your mind. Let’s take a look at some tips for getting started!
“Don’t try to filter them – just write down every experience.”
1. Close Off The Last Year – What Lessons Did You Learn?
The first step in decluttering your mind is to take stock of the last year. Reflect on what happened and what lessons you can take away from it all. Maybe 2022 wasn’t your best year. But there are always things you can learn from even your most challenging experiences.
The best way to identify and acknowledge these lessons is by jotting them all down. Don’t try to filter them – just write down every experience. Go head include the personal or work-related. And alongside, write down what you learned. You might be amazed to discover what lessons you’ve learned over the past year. Acknowledging these is the first step to decluttering your mind. Which may still be subconsciously trying to make sense of those experiences.
2. Let Go Of The Past:
Following on from point one, it’s important to let go of things in the past. Especially if there are events playing over and over in your mind that create negative emotions. Such as shame, regret, and frustration.
Give yourself permission to move on from any disappointments or mistakes you may have experienced last year. This doesn’t mean ignoring what has happened. It simply means allowing yourself to breathe. And move forward without being weighed down by the mistakes, disappointments, and regrets of the past.
Easier said than done you say? One of the best keys for releasing the past is forgiveness. If you can choose forgiveness and understanding rather than grudges or resentment towards those who have hurt or wronged you in the past – including yourself – you’ll not only feel lighter, but will have begun your inner decluttering process to help free up space in your heart and mind, ready for positive growth in 2023.
3. Choose Gratitude:
It’s easy to just focus on the negative experiences of the previous year, but reflecting on all of your experiences through the filter of gratitude can be incredibly therapeutic and freeing.
“Another way to declutter your mind is by clearing out your physical and digital space.”
Gratitude for the experiences you had, the relationships you were in, and the lessons you learned. Yes, the uncomfortable ones too – will foster a renewed sense of hope and optimism as you head into the new year.
4. Create Space To Declutter:
Another way to declutter your mind is by clearing out your physical and digital space. This process can include cleaning out old emails or deleting unnecessary files from your computer, to donating clothes or organizing your home office area – to clearing whatever spaces are frustrating you the most!
Making sure everything is tidy has a direct impact on your mental clutter, giving you headspace for creative thinking and problem-solving skills, rather than constantly being stressed and distracted by mess and the inability to find what you need when you need it.
5. Delete And Filter!
Are you receiving copious amounts of junk mail in your letter box? Is your inbox also overflowing with offers and newsletters? Are you surrounded by people constantly telling what you should be doing with your life?
Commit to deleting things that are distractions, and filtering the “noise” in your world by establishing boundaries with your time and energy. Once you’ve begun this process, determine to undertake a 10 minute “maintenance” clean up every week or two. When you can delete all of the distractions and “should dos,” you will be amazed at how much more space you have in your head and as a result – your life – to focus on the things that really matter to you in 2023 and beyond.
Declutter Your Mind:
Decluttering your mind is essential for starting fresh this year, and my hope is that these five steps will help you face 2023 with clarity and hope. When you commit to taking action, you’ll be well on your way towards achieving clarity, focus, and peace of mind, so don’t wait any longer. Get started now on refreshing your mind so that this year can be your best!
