Beauty Kuel Category Expert: Michele Fieldson
As we age, changes in our skin become more noticeable. The breakdown of collagen (the support system for firm skin) results in loose or sagging skin.
Fine lines, wrinkles, age spots become more noticeable. We look in the mirror and wonder when exactly all this happened.
“One of the great things about aging is allowing others to live their own lives”
And, we all view these changes differently. Some fight tooth and nail to do everything they can to turn back time; others love their crow’s feet and feel every line and wrinkle was well earned and tells its own story. And, there’s somewhere in between.
One of the great things about aging is allowing others to live their own lives and decide what works best for them. No judgment. As long as you aren’t intentionally hurting anybody else (including yourself), I say, Go for it, girl, whatever that looks like for you!
But, I think one thing we can all agree on is we want our skin to look healthy, to look nourished, and well cared for.
Here are a few tips to do just that.
SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN
“sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging of the skin”
The most important thing you can do to take care of your skin is wear sunscreen! According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the number one cancer in the United States. We often think of skin cancer as rather benign, something easily treated at the dermatologist. While early detection is key, more than two people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour. Obviously, a very alarming statistic.
Having said all that, sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging of the skin; i.e., wrinkles, sagging skin, and age spots. An estimated 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun. However, sun damage is cumulative. Only about 23% percent of lifetime exposure occurs by age 18. So, it’s never too late to start using sunscreen!
4 KEY INGREDIENTS TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR SKIN CARE REGIMEN
1. ALPHA-HYDROXY ACIDS (AHAs)
AHAs, also known as fruit acids, exfoliate the outer layer of skin, sloughing off dead, sluggish skin cells that clog pores and leave skin dull and sluggish (and may be one of the reasons that no matter how much you moisturize your skin, it never seems to be enough.)
AHAs refine and brighten skin tone and texture, leaving skin feeling softer, smoother and supple. The appearance of age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles are diminished, and skin looks noticeably hydrated, nourished, and revived.
Glycolic acid is typically the most popular of the AHA’s you will see in skin care. Our Brilliance Cream is a silky, lightweight cream that features glycolic acid and a fruit-acid blend in a moisturizing base of organic tropical oils that will leave your skin touchingly soft and radiant.
2. HYALURONIC ACID
Hyaluronic Acid is a water-trapping magnet. It can retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, drawing in moisture and keeping skin hydrated for that fresh-faced dewy look. It softens and plumps up skin, smooths fine lines and wrinkles, and gives skin a well-nourished, healthy look. You can find hyaluronic acid in our Renewal Nectar Serum, Peptide Complex Serum, and Restorative Night Cream.
3. VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant, it helps fight free radical damage, protecting skin from UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental aggressors. (Free radicals damage DNA and lead to premature signs of aging)
Vitamin C helps brighten and even skin tone and texture, minimizes the appearance of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, and smooths and softens skin. It hydrates skin, allowing skin to retain moisture, for luminous, rejuvenated skin.
Our Renewal Nectar and IIluminating Serums, in the Kuel Shop, has Vitamin C.
4. RETINOL
Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. It is one of the most researched ingredients in skin care and is arguably the single most effective ingredient in any aging skin care routine. Retinol is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps fight free radical damage, reduces the appearance of age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, improves uneven skin tone, and softens and smooths skin. It is a powerhouse, skin-restoring ingredient! You can find retinol in our Restorative Night Cream.
