You know that feeling of standing in front of your closet, knowing that you need to clear it out because your body has changed?
Let’s get real for a second…it’s rough.
Is it even possible to do this without giving up or ending up in a pool of tears?
I hit perimenopause a few months ago and boy have the body changes come. I knew I needed to go through my closet, try on everything and let go of all that is too tight, too short, no longer suits my new body shape or won’t even zip up. I had helped hundreds of women do this very thing, but wow, I felt resistance.
I’m not going to lie, it was emotional but I also realized that there are some things that you and I can do to make this a little less traumatic and maybe even a little therapeutic.
“Choose something from your closet that fits perfectly and makes you feel fabulous on the body you have now.“
How To Clear Out Your ‘Skinny’ Closet Without The Tears:
- Start with what does fit and you love to wear. Choose something from your closet that fits perfectly and makes you feel fabulous on the body you have now. Don’t just look at it. Actually, put it on. Look at yourself in the mirror and compliment yourself. Relish in the feeling of fabulousness.
- Now with that feeling front and center, try everything else on and compare it to that perfect outfit. If it doesn’t give you that feeling, it must go.Â
- Be honest with yourself. The younger you may have tolerated discomfort to look good, but if that is not the case anymore, then let go of everything that isn’t comfortable.
- I’m guessing that you now have a large pile of clothes on your bed or floor. Separate the items that have value and you can resell from the items you will donate. Pack them into bags straight away. This is important, since you may be tempted to go back and retrieve some things just because it’s hard to let go.
- Take a good look at what you have left. Organize your closet so you can clearly see everything. Try on a few of the fabulous outfits you have now. Again, focus on the feeling.
- Add more of the good stuff. You may discover a new look you love. You may want to get a few more pieces that are similar. Do you love wearing long skirts with cropped jackets or do you have a dress style that looks amazing on you that you. See if you can find more dresses that are similar. Make a physical or mental list.
Relief That Comes From A Good Cry:
I have to say that once I was done, it felt like the relief that comes from a good cry. I felt better and was excited to wear what was in my uncluttered, closet of things I love. And… I’m looking forward to adding a few more fun pieces that will bring me joy.
