Beauty Expert: Elise Marquam-Jahns
There’s nothing I like better than finding really excellent makeup products that work especially well for those of us who are older—and then sharing those products with you.
Today I’ll be focusing on eyeshadows from one particular brand that ranks as one of my top five favorite eyeshadow brands. And later, in the accompanying video, I’ll be creating two different eyeshadow looks from two of the more recent palettes from this brand.
“I think most of us want our makeup application to be as quick and easy as possible.”
Two Excellent Eyeshadow Brands:
Today’s article (and video) is Part III of a series I launched a number of months ago on the best eyeshadow brands for older women. If you missed the first two videos in this series on top eyeshadow brands for older women, I’ve put links to them at the end of this article. And prior to officially launching this series, I did videos on two other excellent brands so I’ve included links to those videos as well.
Before letting the cat out of the bag as to which brand we’ll be focusing on today, let me quickly share what my criteria is for choosing the brands in this series of videos. Criterion number one is that the eyeshadows have to be easy to apply and blend.
I think most of us want our makeup application to be as quick and easy as possible. So the easier shadows apply and blend, the quicker the application will be, the less frustration we’ll experience and the better our eye shadow will look.
“And last, because we don’t have to dip back into the colors..”
Good Pigmentation Means We’ll Save Time:
Number two, the shadows have to have good pigmentation. I feel strongly about this point for three reasons. First, good pigmentation means we don’t have to dip back into the eyeshadow color several times to get the amount of color we need for a look.
So, good pigmentation means we’ll save time. In addition, good pigmentation means it will work well for darker skin tones as well as lighter skin tones. And last, because we don’t have to dip back into the colors, we won’t need to use as much product so the palette will last longer which means it will be a better value for us.
The third criterion is that the brand must have a good range of mattes, shimmers, and metallics. And my preference is always for at least an equal number of mattes to shimmers and metallics in most palettes—or more mattes than shimmers.
“Now in the palettes I’ve tried, I’ve been extremely pleased with the quality of the shadows.”
Consistent Quality Of Eyeshadow Palettes:
Fourth, the brand must have consistent quality over many eyeshadow palettes. Now in the palettes I’ve tried, I’ve been extremely pleased with the quality of the shadows.
However, I have heard other beauty YouTubers say that occasionally there may be palettes from this brand that don’t perform quite as well, so I do always recommend watching YouTube reviews on particular palettes before purchasing. But as I said, I have yet to experience a problem with these palettes.
And my last criterion is that most of the palettes should have an interesting color story. And this is certainly true for this brand—as you’ll see.
“I can’t believe the quality of this eye shadow palette. It’s wonderful.”
Best Known For Cosmetics Brand:
So today’s brand is Bh Cosmetics. Bh Cosmetics was launched in Los Angeles in 2009 and is a cruelty free, vegan brand best known for eye shadow palettes. But they do have a range of other makeup products as well—from blushes to false eyelashes. And by the way, if you’ve wondered—as I have– what the B H stands for in Bh Cosmetics, it stands for “be heard.”
Now up until three years ago Bh Cosmetics was really not on my radar screen. But my youngest daughter was visiting us and gifted me with their Glam Reflections rose palette. Now I must confess that since I’d never heard of Bh Cosmetics and since my daughter had said it was a more budget friendly brand, I wrongly assumed that the quality wouldn’t be quite as good.
So I’m rather ashamed to say that I put it aside for a few days. But when I pulled it back out and tried it, I went racing into my daughter’s bedroom and said, “I can’t believe the quality of this eye shadow palette. It’s wonderful.”
“Now even if you’re more comfortable with neutral looks, you definitely can get some neutral looks with the three palettes I purchased.”
They Have Great Sales:
I was fortunate to get two of the three Bh Cosmetics palettes I purchased this past summer on sale. And that’s another good thing about this brand that I should mention. They often have great sales. And you’re especially likely to find good bargains on Holidays. The three that I purchased this past summer which I love are the “Blueberry Muffin” palette, the “Passion in Paris” palette and the “Summer in St. Tropez” palette.
If you’ve watched some of my videos, you know I do enjoy color so I love playing with the color stories of these palettes. But if you’re more inclined toward beautiful neutrals, you’ll also have several palettes from which to choose. They’re all from Bh Cosmetics’ travel series: “Amore in Amalfi,” “Hangin’ in Hawaii” and “Smitten in Switzerland.” Now even if you’re more comfortable with neutral looks, you definitely can get some neutral looks with the three palettes I purchased.
Spring/Summer Palette:
Now let’s create two different eyeshadow looks. Our first look is going to be from the “Summer in St. Tropez” palette. Now you might assume, as I did at first, that this would be strictly a spring/summer palette, but there are definitely some ways to create gorgeous fall/winter looks as well by focusing on some of the mid-tone and darker colors. With the “Passion in Paris” palette, I’m going to create a deeper look. Check out how I created these two eyeshadow looks—and see the final version of each look—in the accompanying video.
As you can probably tell, I really love all three of these BH Cosmetics palettes and keep going back to them! And I hope these palettes from this really excellent eyeshadow brand—and these two looks—will give you some inspiration to create some gorgeous fall looks of your own.
