If you’re struggling with how to dress for your body shape after 50, I’ve got the real-world solutions that work for actual women; no shapewear, no shame, no starting from scratch.
You might hit perimenopause or menopause and suddenly realize the clothes you used to love just don’t feel, or look, the same anymore. Sound familiar? One day you could throw on a go-to outfit and feel fabulous, and the next… nothing works.
Here’s what I see happen all the time: women swing to one of two extremes. Either we go big, baggy, and black to cover everything up, or we squeeze into our old clothes (maybe with shapewear and a size or two up) and hope they’ll still make us feel confident. Neither extreme works. I promise you.
That’s why I’m breaking down exactly how to dress for your body shape after 50 in a way that flatters your figure, makes you feel like YOU again, and lets you finally enjoy getting dressed.
Let’s go.
How To Dress For Your Body Shape After 50 Without Hiding Or Squeezing In:
Step 1: Start Wearing Shape (Not Tight, Not Baggy)
When I say shape, I don’t mean tight. I also don’t mean baggy. Big black sacks are not your friend. Ever. I’ve styled hundreds of women—of all sizes, ages, and shapes—and I’ve yet to find one woman who actually looks or feels good in a shapeless sack.
The answer? Clothes that shape your body. Think waist definition. Think gentle tailoring. Think fabrics that glide rather than cling or tent.
For example, I love wearing a dress that cinches at the waist and flares at the hem. It’s not tight, but it gives my body shape. That slight flare draws the eye down and away from the midsection, and it makes a world of difference.
Step 2: Use Belts The Right Way
Let me introduce you to what my clients call the magic belt.
A simple tie belt, placed just above your natural waist, creates the illusion of curves and instantly slims the silhouette. Bonus? If the belt ties asymmetrically and drapes down the body, it distracts the eye from the tummy area and elongates the torso.
This little trick works whether you’re using a separate belt or buying a dress that comes pre-shaped at the waist like the one on my mannequin, Stella (yes, she’s part of the team).
Step 3: Fit And Flare For The Win
If you’ve been sticking with boxy cuts or upside-down triangle silhouettes, it’s time to switch it up. A fit-and-flare style, where the narrowest part is up top and the volume is below, can totally shift how your body looks and feels.
This doesn’t mean you need a tight waist and a full skater skirt. Even a subtle flare that skims the body can make your waist look more defined, minimize your midsection, and balance your proportions. Just make sure the fabric is substantial enough to avoid clinging in all the wrong places.
Step 4: Balance Your Proportions
Here’s the golden rule: if there’s volume on the bottom (wide-leg pants, flared skirts), go more fitted on top. If your top has volume (a puff sleeve, an oversized blazer), keep the bottom slimmer.
Too much volume on both ends will overwhelm your frame, especially if you’re petite.
For example, I love wide-leg jeans—but only when I pair them with a fitted top or tuck something in. If you hate tucking, that’s okay too. You can wear your top untucked, as long as it has some shape and hits at the right length.
And let’s be honest, anything that makes our legs look longer is a win. Wide-leg pants with a high waist? They work wonders for elongating the legs, slimming the waist, and camouflaging the belly.
Step 5: If You’re Overwhelmed, Start Small
If you’re sitting there thinking, “This all sounds great, but I don’t know where to start”—I’ve got you. Let’s get you looking and feeling fabulous again, without starting from scratch.
