Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
Let’s talk about wardrobe basics for women over 50, but not the ones you’ve heard about a hundred times.
You know the list: the little black dress, the white button-down shirt, the classic blazer, and a good pair of jeans. Sure, they might work for some women, but here’s the thing, when did “basic” become synonymous with “boring”?
We’re all different, so why should we all wear the same basics?
I’ve been styling women over 40 for more than 20 years, and the one truth that always holds up is this: your basics should fit your style, your shape, and your personality. So if you love color, prints, and standing out (and not blending into a sea of black), then keep reading. These bold alternatives might just become the wardrobe staples you didn’t know you needed.
Rethink the Blazer: Try A Bold Leather Jacket Instead:
(Yes, Red Can Be a Neutral)
I don’t even own a classic blazer. It’s just not my thing. But my red leather jacket? I wear it constantly. It’s my version of a basic because it goes with so much of my wardrobe, and it makes me feel alive every time I put it on.
If red feels too bold, choose a color that complements your wardrobe and skin tone. Or go with a neutral, but one with personality. The key? It must fit both your body and your lifestyle.
Skip The White Button-Down: Opt For A Printed Blouse That Pops:
White can wash out some complexions (mine included). Instead, I love a bright, printed blouse in colors that light me up. Bonus: prints are fabulous for disguising tummy concerns and draw the eye up to your face.
Want a tip to create shape with your blouse? Try crossing it over like a faux wrap and tucking it into high-waisted jeans or pants. Instant style upgrade.
Ditch The LBD: Choose A Colorful Dress That Makes You Feel Seen:
Sure, a little black dress is classic. But it also disappears in a crowd. I prefer dresses that make a statement—bold prints, flattering wraps, and shapes that move with me.
A good wrap dress (with plenty of coverage) can flatter curves, skim over the menopause belly, and go from day to night with a simple change of shoes or accessories. Why fade into the background when you can walk into a room and be unforgettable?
Find Your Perfect Jeans: Not Just What’s “Classic”
Stylists love to say “straight-leg, dark-wash jeans” are the go-to basic. But not every body agrees. Right now, my ride-or-dies are high-waisted wide-leg flares. They work for my body and pair with everything from tees to jackets to statement blouses.
Your best jeans are the ones that fit your unique shape and make you feel amazing. Period.
Wardrobe Basics For Women Over 50 Don’t Have To Be Boring:
Here’s the truth: You get to define what “basic” means.
- If a red jacket makes you feel powerful, wear it.
- If a printed blouse gives you energy, buy more.
- If the so-called “must-have” pieces don’t speak to you, leave them.
The most important wardrobe basic? Confidence. And that, my friend, never goes out of style.
