Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
Wardrobe staples for menopause can help you navigate body changes with confidence, style, and even a little love for your body today.
If you’re going through perimenopause or menopause and thinking, “What the heck is happening with my body?”—you’re not alone. Suddenly nothing fits, everything feels different, and your closet feels like the enemy. Girlfriend, I’ve been there. That’s why I’m sharing five wardrobe staples that will not only adapt to your body’s changes but also help you look fabulous and feel more confident in the skin you’re in.
Wardrobe Fix #1: The Wrap Dress
Let’s start strong. A good wrap dress. Now, I know, this one is tricky. So many women tell me, “Tracy, I’ve tried wrap dresses. They don’t work.” But the right one does.
Here’s the difference: a well-designed wrap dress has extra fabric, wraps fully around, cinches the waist, and flares out so you’re not constantly worried about flashing the world. Choose a print, too, because prints camouflage the meno belly like nothing else. I’ve tested this on national TV with seven cameras, and it works.
And here’s why it matters: our bodies change daily. One day bloated, the next day fine, the next day feeling like a teenager again. Clothes that flex with you keep you from riding that same roller coaster.
Wardrobe Fix #2: The Perfect Pair of Jeans
Yes, harder again. But I’ve done the homework. The right jeans make all the difference.
Look for:
- A higher rise. Even just an inch higher smooths the middle.
- Stretch. Non-negotiable. No stretch = no comfort = no point.
- The right leg shape. My current go-to is the wide-leg flare. It fits in the waist and hip, then flares down to elongate your body. Some even have a pin tuck seam down the front and back that literally draws the eye downward, slimming and lengthening.
- But here’s the rule: if you’re wearing wide-leg jeans, don’t drown yourself in oversized tops. Tuck in or wear shorter, fitted tops. Let the jeans do the work; they’ll slim your belly if you let them.
Wardrobe Fix #3: The Tailored Vest
I call this the instant shaper. A tailored vest defines your waist, smooths your silhouette, and hides back bulge (yes, water retention and meno bloat can hit us there too).
The trick? You don’t actually have to close it. Wear it open, let it skim your body, and it still does the magic. It draws the eye down your frame and pulls attention away from the belly. When you find your perfect vest, you’ll reach for it again and again.
Wardrobe Fix #4: A Cropped, Cinched Jacket
The right jacket transforms everything. For wide-leg pants, go cropped and nipped at the waist. For slimmer jeans or a slight boot cut, you can go a touch longer. The key is fit—no boxy jackets allowed.
Why? Because a well-fitted jacket creates shape. Add a little shoulder structure (yes, even shoulder pads in moderation), and suddenly your waist looks narrower. Pair it with jeans, skirts, dresses; just make sure it’s versatile enough to mix with multiple pieces in your closet.
Wardrobe Fix #5: The Wide Belt
I saved the most controversial for last. A wide belt. I can hear you now: “Tracy, won’t that make my belly bigger?” Nope. Worn correctly, it does the opposite.
Place the belt high at your natural waist, not low on your hips. Tie it so the ends fall downward—that vertical line draws the eye down your body and deemphasizes your belly.
Here’s the truth: a belt can completely transform a dress you already own. I’ve done this at countless workshops—pop a belt on someone’s shapeless dress, and boom. Instant transformation. Don’t take my word for it; try it in front of the mirror.
Wardrobe Staples For Menopause That Truly Work:
Our bodies change, and sometimes they change daily. That doesn’t mean your confidence has to disappear with your waistline. With the right staples—wrap dress, jeans, vest, jacket, and belt—you can dress for today’s body, not yesterday’s, and love the woman you see in the mirror.
Girlfriend, that’s the real win.
