Gail Scott: Beauty & Fashion Kuel Thought Leader
Seasons change as does fashion. Spring is here and I’m here with eight fashion tips that I think work well for midlife women.
1. BLACK & WHITE STRIPES:
What could be more classic? And when those stripes run vertically, how slimming! The look is sharp and crisp and I am here for it. And think of how amazing this would be in a swimsuit!
“Both colors can be worn with cool and warm shades of accessories and makeup.”
2. BOLD COLOR:
As our natural coloring fades (graying hair, loss of pigment in eyes, etc.), we can often benefit from a dose of color. This season the colors are bold and saturated. Periwinkle and shades of violet and all shades of bright green are the front runners. Both colors can be worn with cool and warm shades of accessories and makeup. Color blocking and monochromatic looks are still huge, making the most of these bold colors.
Make sure to balance your makeup with these bolder shades or you may look like the clothing is wearing you. Look for a monochromatic suit in pants or walking shorts for a great option. Bold colors in gaucho-length pants are also a hot look and work well if we don’t love showing our legs, but want something other than long pants.
3. BOLD PRINTS:
Prints can be tricky. If you aren’t comfortable in a head-to-toe version, try an accent like a shell or tank with an otherwise monochromatic look. Choose prints that are in proportion to your size for the best look. It’s all in, so find ones that work for you and that you feel great wearing.
4. OPEN-WEAVE KNITS:
These knits are a great way to stay cool and show a little skin, while still feeling confident. The open-weave, lightweight, see-through knits with a light layer underneath are very on-trend. Wear a cami, t-shirt, or slip dress underneath, to control the amount of skin that is showing.
“Fringe can also work on accessories like shoes and bags.”
5. FRINGE:
This one is all about placement. A little fringe at the hem of a skirt can add length without looking heavy or matronly. Also, look for nods at the hem of a jacket or dress. Fun and flattering, fringe can also work on accessories like shoes and bags.
5. METALLICS:
Metallics continue to be hot, and they act as neutrals. If a metallic top or pants is too much, opt for silver, pewter, or gold shoes, belts, or a handbag to get the look. A metallic sandal looks amazing with almost anything.
6. JEWELRY:
Large, clunky, and mixed is the look. This works well for us mature women who have been collecting great pieces for years. Dig into that jewelry box and layer on those pearls, rhinestones, and chains. Keep it in proportion with your size to get the best look.
8. SHOES:
As the years accumulate on our feet, we do not have to settle for unfashionable orthopedics. The platform trend is perfect to look in style and stay comfortable at the same time. Color is the trend, and green is leading the way. You might also opt for a bright orange, mustard, or pink. And don’t think matchy-matchy, throw in a surprise on those feet!
I hope that this list gives you some ideas of ways to express yourself through your fashion this Spring. Pick a few that speak to you and give them a try. Clothing isn’t permanent, so don’t be afraid to try something new!
