Fashion Fridays, Kuel Life Thought Leader: Tracy Gold
Finding our new fashion over 50 does not have to cripple us or bring us to tears.
As a matter of fact, midlife is a time that you get to be more yourself, care less about what other people think and feel empowered. But when it comes to your wardrobe, it’s easy to surrender to the frump. As your body changes, your clothes don’t fit like they used to, there seem to be few brands out there creating fun, funky clothes that work for you and it just seems easier to wear big baggy black clothing that you think covers everything. But does it really? And… is that how you want to feel?
“Resist the temptation to keep all your ‘thin’ clothes in your closet. “
Let’s chat about what style habits to resist and what to embrace:
Resist The Temptation:
Resist the temptation to buy another item of clothing that you can only wear when you aren’t having a ‘bloated’ or ‘fat’ day. It’s not worth it. For me, I got tired of feeling dread when trying on these pieces in hope I would ‘measure up’.
Resist the temptation to keep all your ‘thin’ clothes in your closet. I suggest you give them away and if you aren’t ready for that, put them in another closet where you can’t see them daily. The last thing you want is to open your closet every day only to think to yourself, ‘I’m too fat to wear that’.
Resist the temptation to give up on your style. Just because your body has changed doesn’t mean you have to give up on creating a style that speaks of who you are. Maybe it’s time to explore what your new style would look like if it expresses the empowered you!
Fashion Over 50 Can Embrace Space And Shape:
You need a little extra space as you navigate body changes, but you don’t want to be wearing sack-like clothing.
Here are some items to consider:
1. Fit And Flare:
Dresses that fit and flare and give you a little extra space around your tummy. These need to have some waist shape, but not be too tight that you feel exposed. The flare of the skirt makes your midsection appear smaller in comparison to the width of the hem.
2. Fitted Vests:
These are fabulous to wear over tops and dresses that need a little extra shape and are fabulous if you need to conceal the little extra around the bra strap and waistband, but it looks stylish and intentional versus just trying to cover up.
3. Wear Lose Or Belt:
Dresses you can wear loose or belt. Again, you don’t want block shape dresses because those can look frumpy. Opt for a-line shapes in soft fabrics that will drape your body beautifully. Belt with a wide belt high into your waist for a more fitted look or wear loose if that feels more comfortable on the day.
“Wear tighter on some days and slightly looser on the bloated days.”
4. Wrap Over:
Wrap skirts that wrap over well. These are fabulous as they are so adjustable to what your body is doing on any given day. You can wear them higher into the waist or lower depending on your unique shape. Wear tighter on some days and slightly looser on the bloated days. Either way you will look fabulous.Â
5. Peplum Tops:
Peplum tops are super flattering and disguise your tummy perfectly. They create a sense of fit and flare. If made in a stretch fabric, it will offer comfort and style at the same time.
