Simplicity & Connection Thought Leader: Kay Newton
At 62, many might think it’s time to slow down.
But for me, it was an opportunity to embrace something new and invigorating: CrossFit. Initially, the idea of joining a local open-air CrossFit class seemed daunting, but I quickly discovered a wealth of benefits that have enriched my life in unexpected ways.
Once I got over the embarrassment of:Â
- Having little or no upper body strength.
- Not being able to see the digital information on the cycling bike without reaching for my reading glasses.
- The hysterical laughter when first approaching new obstacles.Â
“CrossFit empowers me to set and achieve new fitness goals regardless of age.”
CrossFit became addictive.
Embracing New Challenges:
Life is about growth and adventure, regardless of age. CrossFit offers me a fresh challenge, both physically and mentally. The thrill of mastering new techniques and conquering obstacles has reignited my zest for life and pushed me beyond my comfort zone.
CrossFit empowers me to set and achieve new fitness goals regardless of age. Each milestone reached, whether mastering a new technique or surpassing a personal record, instills a sense of accomplishment and motivation. The points system helps too, last week I was gifted a sports bag – my first award for recognized hard work in probably the past 40 years.Â
Physical Activity Beyond the Gym:
One of the unexpected perks of joining CrossFit was the extra exercise I gained from cycling to and from the sessions. The bike rides not only improved my cardiovascular health but also acted as a pre-warm-up and a relaxing down after each session.
CrossFit feels the opposite of my regular Practice workouts with Saskia Griffiths yet both complement each other. I find when hiking (another passion of mine), I have more balance and walk without effort, no matter the gradient.
CrossFit Fosters Intergenerational Friendships:
Surprisingly, CrossFit introduced me to a vibrant local community of diverse individuals, many of whom are younger than me. Interacting with this dynamic group has kept me feeling youthful and engaged. The camaraderie and shared passion for fitness have bridged generational gaps and resulted in new friendships.
The sense of community at my local CrossFit box is unparalleled. Whether cheering each other on during workouts or bonding over team events, I’ve formed meaningful connections that extend beyond the sessions.Â
“Embracing the ability to laugh at myself has been key to my CrossFit journey.”
CrossFit Strengthens The Body And Mind:
CrossFit isn’t just about challenging yourself physically it is also mentally challenging. The workouts push my limits, building both physical strength and mental resilience. Each milestone achieved in CrossFit is a testament to my personal growth and stubborn determination.
Engaging in physical activity like CrossFit has not only strengthened my body but also sharpened my mind. I’ve noticed improvements in memory, focus, and cognitive function since starting my CrossFit journey. CrossFit serves as a powerful de-stressor, the discipline and routine of regular workouts have a calming effect on the mind
The Joy Of Laughter:
CrossFit sessions are not just intense workouts; they’re also filled with laughter and camaraderie. The infectious energy and humor shared among fellow CrossFitters creates a positive and motivating atmosphere that makes every session enjoyable.
Yet, for me, the biggest laughter comes from within. Embracing the ability to laugh at myself has been key to my CrossFit journey. Whether it’s trying a new move or pushing through a challenging workout, approaching each experience with humor and humility has made the journey all the more rewarding.
Laughing at myself has not only lightened the intensity of CrossFit but has also taught me valuable life lessons about resilience and self-acceptance. It’s a reminder that while the physical gains are important, the laughter and joy we find along the way are equally transformative.
“One of the unexpected benefits of CrossFit has been improved sleep quality.”
Feeling Good Inside And Out:
Regular exercise has had a profound impact on my overall well-being. The endorphin rush post-workout leaves me feeling invigorated and positive. This feel-good factor has translated into increased energy levels and boosted self-confidence.
One of the unexpected benefits of CrossFit has been improved sleep quality. Physical exertion during workouts promotes deeper and more restful sleep, leading to better overall wellness and vitality.
Role Model For Aging Gracefully:
By embracing CrossFit at 62, I’ve become a living example of defying age-related stereotypes. I encourage others to view aging as an opportunity for growth, vitality, and continuous self-improvement.
Family and friends have been inspired to prioritize their health and fitness, fostering a supportive community dedicated to personal wellness and I love this positive ripple effect on those around me.
Regular exercise, like CrossFit, plays a crucial role in enhancing longevity and maintaining a high quality of life. I believe that staying active and embracing new challenges contribute to a fulfilling and vibrant later life. What will you challenge yourself to do differently this month?
