Money And Your Nervous System: The Surprising Path To Peace

Money And Your Nervous System: The Surprising Path To Peace

Money And Your Nervous System:

2
VIEWS

Money and your nervous system are more connected than you think. After working with hundreds of women on their finances, I’ve come to believe that connection is where most money struggles actually begin.

“Knowing what to do with money isn’t the same as being able to do it. The missing piece may not be financial knowledge at all.”

By the time we reach our 50s, most of us know what we’re supposed to do with money.

Save more. Spend less. Charge what we’re worth. Invest. Plan for retirement. Stop rescuing everyone else.

We’ve read the books. We’ve listened to the podcasts. We’ve accumulated decades of life experience.

So why does money still have the power to make us anxious, reactive, or exhausted?

After working with hundreds of women over the years, I’ve become convinced that the issue is rarely a lack of financial knowledge.

The real issue is that different parts of us are pulling in different directions.

We make money decisions with far more than our minds.

Every financial decision involves at least five parts of us:

  • Our body – what we feel in our nervous system.
  • Our speech – the stories we tell ourselves and others about money.
  • Our mind – our intentions, values, and understanding.
  • Our goodness – the goodness we bring into the world through our work, generosity, and service.
  • Our performance – what we actually do with money every day.

When these five move together, money begins to feel surprisingly simple.

When they don’t, even the smallest financial decision can feel heavy.

When The Body And Mind Disagree

Money And Your Nervous System

Have you ever decided to increase your rates, only to feel your stomach tighten as soon as you opened your pricing page?

Your mind knows you’re worth it.

Your body is terrified.

Or perhaps you’ve promised yourself you’ll finally look at your finances this weekend, yet somehow you find yourself cleaning the kitchen, answering emails, or finding a hundred other things to do instead.

We often think we’re procrastinating.

Sometimes we’re simply protecting a nervous system that doesn’t yet feel safe.

The body always tells the truth before the mind catches up.

When Your Words Don’t Match Your Experience

Many women tell me,

“I’m fine.”

Yet underneath, they’re frightened.

Others constantly minimize themselves.

“It wasn’t a big deal.”

“Anyone could have done it.”

“I’m not really successful.”

Over time, our speech shapes our relationship with money.

If we continually diminish ourselves, our financial decisions begin to reflect that diminished sense of value.

When Your Actions Run Ahead Of Your Values

This is one of the most common patterns I see.

A woman deeply values balance and wellbeing.

Yet she works evenings.

She answers emails on weekends.

She says yes when every part of her longs to say no.

Her values are beautiful.

Her habits belong to an earlier chapter of her life.

Many of us learned to survive by moving quickly, staying productive, solving problems, and carrying everyone else’s needs.

Eventually, those habits continue long after they are needed.

The Part We Rarely Talk About: Merit

One of the greatest surprises in my work has been discovering how many women struggle to receive the goodness they already create.

Think about your own life.

Perhaps you’ve raised children.

Supported aging parents.

Built a business.

Volunteered in your community.

Mentored younger colleagues.

Held friendships together.

Cared for neighbours.

Listened when others needed you.

This is the quiet goodness your life generates. In Buddhism, this is called merit. I like to think of it as the goodness that naturally flows from a life lived with generosity, integrity, compassion, and service.

Yet many women never allow themselves to feel nourished by it.

Instead, they immediately move on to the next responsibility.

They receive appreciation and quickly brush it aside.

“Oh, it was nothing.”

“It wasn’t difficult.”

“I just did what anyone would do.”

The result?

You keep giving.

The world benefits.

But you feel strangely empty.

Not because you haven’t done enough.

Because you’ve never allowed your own heart to receive the goodness you’ve already brought into the world.

The Hidden Split

In Buddhist practice, there is a beautiful image of yellow light filling every part of our being until nothing is left divided.

I love this image because I don’t believe most money struggles are really about money.

They’re about fragmentation.

One part of us longs for freedom.

Another desperately seeks security.

One part wants generosity.

Another is terrified there won’t be enough.

One part wants rest.

Another believes our worth depends upon productivity.

One part knows we are enough.

Another still believes we must prove ourselves.

No amount of financial advice can heal that inner division.

Midlife Offers Us Something New

One of the gifts of being over 50 is that we begin to see the cost of living divided against ourselves.

Many of us have spent decades overriding our bodies.

Ignoring our intuition.

Working harder.

Giving more.

Trying to become enough.

Eventually something inside quietly says,

“I don’t want to live like this anymore.”

I don’t believe this is a crisis.

I believe it’s wisdom.

Instead of asking,

“What’s wrong with me?”

We can begin asking gentler questions:

  • What is my body trying to tell me about money?
  • Where am I still trying to earn my worth?
  • Where have I forgotten to receive the goodness I’ve already created?
  • What financial decision would become easier if every part of me moved in the same direction?

Coming Home

Real financial freedom isn’t simply having more money. It’s no longer leaving parts of yourself behind every time money enters the conversation.

It’s allowing your body to have a voice.

Letting your values shape your habits.

Receiving appreciation without shrinking.

Trusting that your contribution matters.

Living from a place where your actions no longer need to prove your worth.

When body, speech, mind, goodness, and action begin moving together, something remarkable happens.

Money stops feeling like an endless problem to solve.

It becomes another place where we can practise wholeness.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of midlife.

Not becoming someone different.

Finally becoming undivided.
